1: reading to disagree

i recently read a derek sivers article called singing the counter-melody.

in it, he points out that his advice may seem strange to some people, consumed on its own.

that's because his advice isn't meant to exist in a vacuum.

it's meant to respond to the "main messages" in whatever field he's writing about.

that led me to realize that (the best) writing doesn't spontaneously appear out of nowhere.

it's a response to other writing — namely, other ideas that the author thinks are wrong or need to be challenged.

it's a good reminder to me that everything is a remix.

and to create the stuff i want to create, i can simply start by finding stuff i almost like, and disagreeing with it.
